Gurmat Martand 1
What this book is about
Gurmat Martand is the vast encyclopaedia of Sikh literature compiled by Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha, the first volume of a set that eventually ran to more than thirty volumes. The title page credits a committee of fifty-four contributors and Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha of Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib, Amritsar, as publisher, though the printed year on this scan is garbled. An alphabetical index and a contents leaf show that the volume treats a wide range of Gurmukhi topics and quotes or catalogues the standard works of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Dasam Granth, Bhai Gurdas, Bhai Nand Lal and later poets including Guru Gobind Singh, Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Bhai Nand Lal and Bhai Prihalad Singh. Inside, entries on figures and concepts of Sikh theology and history appear under their Gurmukhi headings, making the volume usable both as reference and as dictionary of Gurmukhi terminology.
