What this book is about

Part two of the Universal Encyclopaedia of Punjabi Language and Culture, an ongoing multi-volume dictionary of Punjabi words produced by the Punjabi Sahitya Akademi and edited by Harjit Singh Gill, with Mukhtiyar Singh Gill as deputy editor. The prefaces by Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh and by the chief editor set out the method: words are gathered in pairs and clusters rather than singly, so that sukh-dukh, sat-asat, gurmukh-manmukh, suhagan-duhagan and similar expressions are treated together with their form, sense, cultural context and philosophical import, taking Gurbani and Bhai Gurdas's writings as the base and ranging from the fifteenth to the present century. The text opens with an article on hakkay, built around 'humai' as a worked example of this pairing method.
