What this book is about
Gurmukhi Lipi Da Janam Te Vikas, the origin and development of the Gurmukhi script, is Sardar J.B. Singh's magnum opus, described in its own preface as the first authentic Punjabi book on the subject. Panjab University commissioned it in 1948 at the author's request, and this is the second edition, brought out by the University's Publication Bureau. Sardar Ji B. Singh (1877-1950) was a scholar, researcher and teacher of script and language studies who spent his working life in the Posts and Telegraphs Engineering Service, retiring as Chief Engineer. The contents trace writing in India from Indus Valley seals and Brahmi through Sharada, Takri, Kaithi, Lantsa, Sharabha, Siddham, Tibetan and related scripts, the origins of Gurmukhi itself, the fonts and symbol marks of Punjab's shopkeepers, and the history of old handwritten manuscripts.
