What this book is about
Introductory Punjabi by Ujjal Singh Bahri and Paramjit Singh Walia is a textbook of Punjabi grammar published by the Publication Bureau of Punjabi University, Patiala, and printed at Leonard Printing Press, Patiala. The preface states that the book is aimed primarily at speakers of other Indian languages who already know something of Punjabi culture, that non-Indians can also use it because the lessons are properly graded, and that the sound structure is only partly represented, with a warning that Punjabi pronunciation differs sharply from Hindi and other Indian languages and is best acquired by imitating a speaker. The contents cover notes on pronunciation and orthography, notes on grammar, and graded lessons on simple sentences, imperatives, interrogatives, contextual sentence types, negation and emphasis, concord and agreement, the nominal phrase, causatives and transitivity, and complex and compound verb phrases, with an appendix section on translation.
