What this book is about
Pran Sangali, edited by Dr. Jagjit Singh Khanpuri of the Department of Punjabi Studies at Punjabi University, Patiala, published under Dr. Ranbir Singh, Registrar of that university, and printed by Ram Printograph, New Delhi, in 1999 at Rs 250. The prefatory note from the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. H. K. Mannmohan Singh of Patiala, explains that the volume belongs to a project under which old manuscripts held in private hands are edited and published. The first editor's note gives the substance: Pran Sangali is a compilation connected with the practice of yoga and pranayama, whose origin the preface attributes to Guru Nanak Dev, who uttered it at Chardi Kal, and which Guru Arjan asked for and then excluded from the Adi Granth as improper; incomplete fragments had been printed before, Sant Sampuran Singh having edited about eighty chapters in Devanagari, whereas this edition follows Gurmukhi and prints 113. The editors are careful to say the authorship is doubtful, since the internal evidence, sequence of chapters and quotations do not fit Guru Nanak, and that a PhD thesis has been written on the work.
